Garden of the Unconceived by Hugo Moro
The City of Auburn and the Auburn Arts Commission are pleased to present an art installation Garden of the Unconceived by Hugo Moro at Auburn’s Art on Main window-front gallery, on view April 17th – July 10th, 2026.
Artwork Statement:
“In the Cuba of my youth, the tradition of upcycling became widespread throughout the island in the sixties due in large part to the scarcities caused by the USA embargo. I recognized the importance of this practice as an art form after being exposed to the Contemporary Art Movements that used these strategies, especially in the works of Robert Rauschenberg and Edward Kienholz.
This work, originally titled Garden of the Unconceived, grew out of the realization that the recycling of plastics, which we conscientiously practice, is no more than “green washing” paid for with our tax dollars, benefiting manufacturers who pass the cost of cleaning up their pollution on to us.
The work is intended as a warning and a learning opportunity, where Unconceived refers to the inhabitants of a dystopian future in which nature can only be experienced artificially. The work also serves as an homage to those in our countries of origin and here who make a living by crafting discarded materials into works of art and utilitarian objects..” – Hugo Moro
